Principles refer to specifications or prescriptions for working together with or arranging various elements to create the intended landscape style. Good landscape design follows a variety of seven principles: unity, balance, proportion, focalization or emphasis, sequence or transition, rhythm, and repetition.

Unity refers to the application of elements to create harmony and consistency using the main theme or notion of the landscape design. Unity gives the landscape design an awareness of oneness and interconnection. Unity in landscape design can be carried out by using plants, trees, or material that possess repeating lines or patterns, a common hue, or similar texture. However, too much unity in landscape design may be boring. Therefore, it is important to help introduce some variety or contrast in the landscape design.

Balance gives the landscape design an awareness of of equilibrium and balance in visual attraction. There are three ways through which balance may be offered in landscape design. Symmetrical or formal balance is achieved in the event the mass, weight, or number of objects both sides with the landscape design are the identical. Asymmetrical or informal equilibrium in landscape design suggests feelings of balance on equally sides, even though the sides usually do not look the same. Asymmetrical balance in visual attraction can be achieved by using other compositions on either side from the central axis. Landscape design with radial balance includes a center point. Proportion describes the size relationship between areas of the landscape design or between a component of the design and the design all together. Focalization or Emphasis directs visual awareness of a point of interest or prominent area of the landscape design. This could be any hanging earth-forms sculpture, a stone-finished Corinthian lawn fountain, a mass of system herbaceous perennials, or an elegant spruce. Emphasis in landscape style may be achieved with a contrasting color, a different or unconventional line, or a plain history space. Paths, walkways, and strategically placed plants lead the attention to the focal point with the landscape without distracting on the overall landscape design.
