Its a general phenomenon that when people look at their life, their goals, and their satisfaction, things are found lacking. People are stuck in different parts; there are some who know their life goals, and some who dont know them. Whether the goals are correct or not is a different story. Those who have goals may not be working to achieve them. This causes a general anxiety within the mind; we know we should be doing something but dont act towards it. I believe the anxiety may be latent in some, but eventually it will come to the fore.
So the first thing is to have a direction, and the second is to move towards it. This action, this motion, requires overcoming inner doubts and lack of motivation. You may have inner doubts about your chosen direction. IS it the right choice. Should I do something else instead. Finally, you also face what I call self-inertia. You would rather remain static than move towards your goals, and second, you are rather easily satisfied by making a small move towards your goals and then going back into a resting phase. For example, you start writing an essay, and then 2 minutes later you are back surfing the web.
How can we avoid inner doubts and our own inertia. There are several Psychology experiments techniques that can be used but they must be honestly applied so that their effectiveness can be tested against your personality. I don’t find that one technique fits all.
The first suggestion I have is to talk to your own self. Yes, seriously. Find a quiet place for twenty minutes, and ask yourself questions and give yourself answers. These should focus on “why.” Ask yourself why you did a particular thing, or didn’t do it. “Why didn’t you exercise today. Don’t you want to get better. You know that it is going to take effort right.” and listen to your honest answers. You can imagine yourself in the situation. Be aware that you will always try and trick yourself. You will always come up with excuses to avoid work, or difficult situations and at the time, these reasons will seem valid to your logical mind. Don’t wake up early, its ok. You had a rough night last night. Skip your morning run. You can make it up in the evening.” Later on when you look back, you will regret your actions.
The second suggestion is to get Psychology experiments book external accountability, preferably paid and in-person, and someone who has authority over you. For example, you will have no problem getting to work for an 8AM meeting, but if you want to wake up early to study, you will not be able to do it. This is the factor of external authority. The same situation will occur with a study partner, or an exercise partner, or a business partner.
Ultimately these techniques to drive yourself are a component of effective time management. Have a good goal, focus on it, and keep reminding yourself to achieve it using the two techniques listed above.
