If you drive a car you are required to put your headlights on when it is dark out. This allows oncoming cars to see you and helps keep you safe. The same is true when you are out on the water in a watercraft. Although they're not called headlights, any boat or ship that you are operating must obey the rules and those rules include multiple areas of lighting.A lake or ocean is a dark lonely place, especially at night. Where a road will have streetlights lining it, you're pretty much on your own when it comes to bodies of water. This makes it dangerous if you are on the water but can't see who else is on the water and how close you are to them. Enter marine lights. They allow all boaters to see all other boaters no matter where they are in relation to themselves. They help avoid collisions and you can use them to follow other boaters to areas where you are more familiar, if you happen to find yourself lost.

The general rule of thumb is that you must utilize the lights between sunset and sunrise and in certain weather conditions like fog and heavy storms that will make it harder to see where other watercraft are located. There are four main types of marine lights, the sidelights, the stern light, the masthead light and the all around white light, but in addition you can light any areas you would like depending on your personal taste. The sidelights are red and green and sit on the sides of your boat. The red is on the port side, the green is on the starboard side and these coded colours make it easy for other boaters to see and know where you are at all times. As the name suggests, the stern light is on the stern and is white in colour. It allows your craft to be seen from behind.

The masthead light is also white and it shines forward and to both port and starboard sides. It is something that is needed on all power driven vessels and should always be on when the vessel is under engine power. The all around white light serves as an anchor light when the sidelights aren't illuminated. They too help other vessels see your boat when you're out on the water.Lighting makes sense on cars as well as boats, keep illuminated and keep safe!
